Gung hay fat choy!
This is year of the Dragon. If you were born in this year, you have lots of energy and are a good friend. We read stories about the Chinese zodiac and the animals within it. We also learned about the many traditions celebrated during Chinese New Year. The students have posted what they have learned about this festive time on our bulletin board outside the class. The highlight of the unit is the quick tour of Chinatown and delicious meal at Don Mee’s (permission forms are forthcoming). This is an exciting lunch where we look forward to trying many new flavours!
The fairytale unit is coming up very soon. We will spend a good portion of class time reading and discussing the many different fairytales. The students will be expected to write their own at the end of the unit incorporating the elements of a fairytale into their story. We expect to read about heroes of all shapes and sizes, dastardly villains and many magical moments. It is always a delightful read!
We are just about ready to start our animal research projects. This project is a great introduction to research using the table of contents, index and glossary. It also opens up discussion around non-fiction and fiction books as well as a fact versus an opinion. It is tremendous fun and one all the students enjoy sinking their teeth into.
Gymnastics will start next week and will surely be the highlight. We are very lucky to be participating in this programme and have access to the great coaches and equipment at Victoria Gymnastics. If you get a chance, come down and watch one of our sessions. There is a viewing gallery that gives a great birds-eye view of the facility.
As always, we welcome hearing from you. Feel free to drop by, or send us an email.
Regards,
Judy Hodges and Kristin Meissner
