Grade 5

January 2012

Grade 5 students are looking forward to an exciting new year.

We are beginning to prepare for the Speech Festival, memorizing and studying two poems which we will be performing in April. Many of the students will also be performing in duologues, reader’s theatre and solo poetry recitation. This is a good time to work on writing and performing our own poetry, skits and drama. Studying the Gold Rush in Social Studies gives us a chance to really enjoy learning about the history of British Columbia, using our Smart Board to access web sites and the Cariboo Gold Rush Game, creating our own time lines and booklets. Our novel for this term links in well with our Social Studies; an adventure set in the 1860’s in which two children from Victoria travel the Cariboo Road in search of their father. We will visit the Ross Bay Cemetery to see the graves of some of the important people in the history of British Columbia.

This term’s Science is a favourite too. The study of Forces and Simple Machines means we can observe machines in daily life and build some of our own.

Being able to watch some of the construction going on in the playground right now has been a bonus! In music, work has begun with Mr. Gormley on H.M.S. Pinafore and everyone is excited about this end-of –the-year highlight production!

In P.E., Gymnastics has already begun, and we will be doing this once a week for 10 weeks. Volleyball will be our other focus in P.E. this term.

So overall, lots of work and fun will be happening in Grade 5!
