Our Junior Kindergarten / Pre-School program is an extension of the education provided by the Christ Church Cathedral Educational Society, and is located in James Bay.
It is our strongly held belief that children learn through play in the company of friends. Our program is packed with fun activities and experiences that help children learn to understand and handle their feelings appropriately and to develop satisfying friendships, all while growing personal knowledge about their ever-expanding world.
We use a theme-based approach to present a developmentally appropriate curriculum. A variety of short and long themes keep the children engaged. These themes may be seasonal or stress a particular concept. For example, All About Me (my family, my body, my world), The Seasons, International Holidays and Celebrations, Colours and Shapes, Transportation, Tools and Machines, Space, Day and Night, Weather Patterns, Animals, Butterflies, Insects, Plants, and Oceans. There is so much to learn!
The world is an exciting place and we like to get the children out into it as much as possible. Regular visits to our main campus and its library are a favourite destination, as is our monthly Chapel service at Christ Church Cathedral, where we meet our friends from the ‘big school’. We take regular outdoor walks, go on visits to the Kindergym at the James Bay Community Centre, and enjoy frequent visits to the beach – just blocks away.
Our teachers are all experienced Early Childhood Educators. They understand children’s developmental stages and their learning styles, and effectively support the children during their busy day of fun and learning. With a minimum ratio of one teacher to eight students, children receive significant individual attention. The children get to enjoy regular visits from specialist teachers for music, art, physical activity, Christian faith, and even French for our four year olds!
Our program is offered on a full-time, Monday to Friday basis. We offer two schedule options; the more structured activity based program runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily. Our extended schedule begins at 7:30 AM and closes the day at 5:30 PM.
At Cathedral School Junior Kindergarten we accept all families in all their diversities.
